We went out of town for a few days. When I returned, I saw that the person caring for our animals left the door to our guest room open. Our chihuahuas were allowed to defecate and urinate all over the futon mattress. The doo-doo was easy to clean up. Can I remove that much old dog urine, and the mattress be fresh-smelling, safe, and healthy to sleep on? Or, should I get rid of the mattress? Thank you!

I was hoping that someone could give me a tip. The cabinet under my bathroom sink smells funky. It smells of a combination of urine and damp. I tried cleaning the cabinet, spraying it w/lysol and putting a mixture of baking soda and carpet freshener and none of it helped. Does anyone have any suggestions that work??? Thanks, Alisa

For the bonfire dog pee dilemma-- try a urine remover with enzymes, or a laundry detergent with enzymes (also called biological powder) --mixed with a bit of water, so it's like paste. Leave it overnight, then wet-vac it up (or blot it up with a lot of papertowels or old rags). Also, I've heard piling salt does well on fresh stains, for soaking up the liquid (let dry, then vacuum up the salt crumbles). Good luck. --I just found runny poo on our white carpet. ;o;

Question: My dog peed on my cream wool rug on bonfire night. Specialist pet urine cleaners have failed to remove the stain. The stain is now dry - any tips for getting rid of the stain?

Puppy urine accidents on carpet, blot with paper towels to remove as much as possible then cover the spot with table salt. Make the salt pile pretty thick, 1/2" to 1" thick. Salt will draw out moisture that has gone deeper than the towels wil reach. Let the salt dry completely, it will be hard and crusty. Pick the salt off the carpet and then vacuum.

FROM KIM!! Cleaning a mattress. I rubbed a bar of soap with a damp washcloth then used the washcloth to clean my son's mattress after he had a nighttime accident on it and it smells wonderful. I got on top of a towel on the wet spot and bounced to soak up the moisture.

Be careful to NEVER use ammonia based cleaners for floors or other cleaning (such as a trash container, or even windows) if you have pets. I was scrubbing my floors and patio doors with ammonia and hot water. Cleaned great but the dog mistook the ammonia smell for urine and now "marks its territory" where the ammonia cleaner was used. BAD! Ammonia smell will last long after another cleaner is used over it-- a dog can still smell it when we can't. Antibacterial is best.

If you have a pet urine problem in the house you can make a doggie diaper for a male dog. Just buy flannel and velcro, measure the dogs circumference, sew an appropriate sized rectangle out of the flannel to wrap around the dogs middle (covering the privates) and fasten at the dogs back with the velcro. You can use incontinence pads sold at any drugstore just placing them inside the rectangle. Changing this pad a few times a day is so much more sanitary then finding an unexpected puddle. Still let the dog out whenever needed but there is no more surprise urine carpet soiling- especially through the night.

Do NOT use ammonia for removing pet stains. It smells like urine to cats and dogs, so they will be tempted to return and relieve themselves in the same area. Use an enzyme based pet stain cleaner as directed- it gets the stain and smell out. If there is a present lingering dog/cat smell - get your carpets steam cleaned and get your pet potty trained! Don't coop them up in one space too long, or there will be accidents.
