On the pull string, i want to say they had a roll of cotton soaked in non toxic bleach and they wrapped the cotton on the string and then put plastic wrap around the cotton and let it sit. I hope I am remembering this right.

Never, ever, use bleach and ammonia together. They'll react and give off chlorine gas, which is highly toxic and can be lethal.
