I have seen a few microwave solutions that include a bowl of water ad a slice of lemon and I agree but would like to add that if you alow the bowl to sit for five to ten minutes and then come into the microwave with a clean dry cloth starting from the top nearly every bit will just wipe away from the soaking in the steam.

The microwave ovens at my workplace are badly abused. I am usually the one to take responsibility for cleaning them. During my lunch break, I place a bowl of water in and nuke it on high for 10 minutes. The steam softens up the gunk and it wipes away easily.

The microwave in my house tends to get a build up of dried on food spatters. As I do my weekly cleaning, I put a glass bowl that can hold about a pint of water and turn the microwave on for about 10 minutes. The steam from the water helps loosen dried on food! I do other cleaning while the bowl is in the microwave cooking. Most times I just wipe it all out and then rinse with bleach-water. For tougher food spatters, just repeat!

I use water heated in my coffee pot or the microwave to soak the gunk under the burners of my electric stovetop. I soak all that up, then I pour a 2nd set of water with dish soap.

For burnt items in a microwave (esp. popcorn) try NON acetone nail polish remover. Steam a little lemon in water after for the smell.

About the microwave, the best thing that I have done is put a cup of water in with some lemon juice and let it boil for a few minutes and then wipe out the microwave and it smells good and all the goop comes out as nice as pie. crazyknittincook

My first.. question! Urgent! How can you clean a microwave after you burnt something in it? It is still yellow inside and smells burnt.

To clean glass or ceramic candle holders, put in microwave for a short time, usually 30 seconds to a minute will do. Pop the wax out easily, or wipe it out with paper towel then wipe out residue with warm soapy water. This has saved me from throwing out and just giving up on many candle holders!

Microwave: A lot of people mention the lemon wedge in boiling water bit, but I also add 1/4 cup of baking soda. And when I had a garbage disposal I would run the leftover lemon through it. Cut it up pretty small though, I wouldn't want to be responsible for clogging yours up.

A warm microwave is so much easier to clean than a cold one. Place a cup of water in the centre with a half of lemon immersed in the water and boil using the microwave. Wipe the microwave immediately and it leaves it smelling lovely and lemony fresh.

A great way to kill germs in your kitchen sponge is to pop it in the microwave for 2 minutes. A lot of medical research shows that 99% of germs can be killed in the sponge when microwaving it for 2 minutes. Use care though: 1) Your sponge should not have steel, metal or meltable plastics 2) Sponge should be rinced out and wet 3) If in doubt your sponge can overheat, do it in 2 increments of 1 minute. Wish Aggie could do a swab of a microwaved sponge!

The best way to clean stains from crockery teapots, cups bottom of plates etc is bleach. Always wear rubber gloves and either pour direct into teapot, cup, then pour bleach onto a sponge and clean outside of item (remembering the inside of handles) or if the crockery is dishwasher and microwave proof, you should be able to fill your sink with hot water and bleach and leave the dishes to soak for 30 mins. make sure you rinse thoroughly and any smell has gone.
