I compost my garbage for my small garden. I place peelings and other vegetable waste in a plastic food storage tub next to my sink until it fills. Then I place the waste in my composter. The plastic food container tends to smell badly by the time it is full. I have found wiping it and the lid out with white vinegar and letting it air dry solves this problem with little fuss.

Mildew and food particles tend to settle in the bottom of the silverware holder attached to my plastic dish drainer. Just adding a few drops of bleach directly to the bottom of the silverware container after cleaning it has prevented ant brown mildew build-up.

Heavily Iced Freezer: Empty & Unplug Freezer. Sit a pan of HOT water inside the freezer. Before you begin scrubbing, Throw a hand towel in the pan. Wring out the thoroughly wet hand towel around the perimeter top edge of the freezer. Use a PLASTIC putty knife to separate the ice from the wall of the freezer. Ice sheets pop off the wall. Proceed to clean with baking soda & dish soap. Freezer cleaned in under 5 minutes! Now... to get the foods organized... hummmm.

For single person households or others where you can't or don't run the dishwasher everyday, put a scoop of oxygen enzyme powder in addition to dishwashing powder in the prewash cycle and it will do a good job on dishes that may not be going to wash up properly. Running this also keeps dishwasher smelling fine.

To clean burnt food from under the stove, try a mixture of baking soda, salt, and water. It works wonders as a cleaner, and if you make a separate batch, it can be used as toothpaste, as well!

cookers- when your stainless steel in the oven are brown with brunt on food, place them in a bath of hot water with a sprinkle of washing powder and leave over night - the next day the dirt will slide off when you wash them and also removes any stains in your bath it kills two birds with one stone.

To remove scorched on or burnt on food from your pots and pans add enough water to cover the burnt on pieces and regular dish soap. Boil for approximately 1 minute and with a little effort the food disappears.

I live in an apartment, that has really inefficient old appliances. The worst being the dishwasher. If I leave just the littlest bit of food on a dish, it'll stay or wind up on my glassware. Yuck! This is what I do now to fix this problem. If I have stuck on food (like hard stuck on food left on the counters for hours), I add to the dishwasher, my dishwasher tablet, and fill the dispensers with cheap distilled vinegar. It's roughly a 1/4 to 1/3 cup of vinegar for a full load (roughly the amount of dishes 3 meals a day x 2 days x 3 people). My dishes come out sparkling and squeaky clean every time!

The microwave in my house tends to get a build up of dried on food spatters. As I do my weekly cleaning, I put a glass bowl that can hold about a pint of water and turn the microwave on for about 10 minutes. The steam from the water helps loosen dried on food! I do other cleaning while the bowl is in the microwave cooking. Most times I just wipe it all out and then rinse with bleach-water. For tougher food spatters, just repeat!

When preparing dinner, keep a bowl handy to throw in your veggie peelings and other garbage while preparing your food. Makes for easy clean up. As well before I start my prep. I fill the sink with hot soapy water to put the dishes in that I am using. Supper time is easy and effortless!

To prevent your trash bin from getting smelly especially in the summer months, put any food scraps in a freezer bag and store in freezer until trash day. This will also keep the flies away.

Question: Help! I have just bought my first home and found an oven from hell. There is seriously burnt on food all over the inside of the oven and plastic melted onto the oven door. What is the best way to clean off burnt food from your oven and how do I get rid of that awful burnt on plastic?

Ant bites -- good enough on fire ants in Texas, so should be good for any ant bite: Dab a bit of vinegar, bleach, or dish washing detergent (liquid) to counteract the venom in the bite. And to take care of the ants themselves-- make a moat of water around the antbed, then a little farther out, sprinkle dry cream of wheat. The ants will eat the dry food, and when they drink the water, their bodies won't handle the expansion.

Thanks to Kim for this idea on her show. If you run out out of soap pads. Roll a sheet of tin foil into a ball and it will work better the the soap pad in washing stubborn food off of pots & pans. I looked at this tip weird when I heard it & tried it. It works. I told my daddy when he was wondering if we had any the next day. He gave me the same weird look then also tried it. Its cheaper too. f you have a dirty pan that you just can't seem to get clean or you burned something this really works! Squirt a little dishwasher detergent in the pan and fill with hot water. If it is encrusted inside and out then fill the sink and immerse the offending pan. You can leave it overnight but if it is just stuff burned or dried on a few hours will suffice. Works great even on old baked on stains! Scrub with nylon brillo pad. It usually wipes right off with no effort. The best brand I have found is Cascade Complete. It eats right thru all the food and grease. It only takes about a teaspoon for the average pan. You can also use it on stovetops and ovens.
