Not a tip, a question. How do you clean the dust and dirt from fabric items that can't go into a washing machine? I have a couple of items like a few hats, a pair of small stuffed animals, and some fabric covered boxes that are gathering dirt and have no idea how to clean them. Thanks.

We have old Edwardian brilliant cut glass badly stained with 100+ years of coal dust, smoke & nicotine which seemed impossible to clean with conventional cleaners. We made a paste of bicarb & vinegar and smeared over, left it for 15 minutes and washed off with a bit of elbow grease - the glass is now sparkling clean.

Dip a soft bristled paint brush in fabric softener and allow to dry. Use this to dust your knick-knacks. It will not only remove the dust but keep the dust from collecting so quickly.

To clean silk flowers, place a cup of salt in a paper bag. Drop in your artificial flowers and shake well. This will get all the dust off them without damage.

Instead of using a feather duster which will just move dust around your room, fill a bowl with hot water and add a few drops of your favourite essential oil (I recommend lemon and lavender). Then soak a clean rag in the bowl, wring out and use to pick up dust. You'll enjoy the benefits of aromatherapy while giving your house a great smell and an eco friendly clean!

If you have a vacuum like a dyson, take apart the canister part, clean all the dust from all the parts, then after it drys, rub down all the parts inside with essential oil (like lavender or tea tree oil) with cotton balls. When you are done toss the cotton balls into the canister. When you vacuum again, it will make your house smell lovely. (and you are killing germs inside your cleaner)

Cleaning removable filters from your vacuum is easy if you have a leaf blower. I take them outside, hold the filter in one hand. In the other hand I hold my leaf blower. A basic leaf blower has 150 mph air. I simply blow out all the dust with the leaf blower. It works wonders. It's quick and easy, and your vacuum works much more effficiently.

To Tracey with the plaster dust on the terracotta tiles--I'm assuming it's gotten wet? Otherwise it should have just vacuumed up. If there is not much, I would try soaking it by wringing water over a small area at a time until it softens and dilutes, and then wipe it up. If there are chunks, use a plastic scraper (like on the back of a scrubber brush) and chip it off before soaking it. That sounds like a mess! Good luck.

The only thing that I've found to remove plaster/plaster dust (I spilled venetian plaster on my tile) from tile and grout is Goof-Off and a cotton ball. Dab on and rub gently then clean off with wet rag.

If your sharing your very small apartment with a feline friend, a great place to store his potty is under your kitchen counter. this will also give him a little privacy, and wont be in plain view when you have guests over. Just be sure to take it outside or to another room to clean-you dont want any of the dust particles to get on any of your kitchen surfaces.

Remember to dust and vaccum regularly under and around each couch cushion and the couch itself- especially if you have pets.

I save my used fabric softener sheets to dust computer and television screens. The sheets cause no streaks and seem to repel dust.

To get your patent white shoes clean, use a little non-acetone nail polish remover on them. Buff with a aerosol furniture polish sprayed on a soft cloth. They will look like new, Also, use the furniture polish on high gloss black shoes. It takes out scratches and gives a high shine while repelling dust. Keep polishing wipes at your desk to clean your shoes. You'll always look spiffy!

Here's how I help keep my car clean. I keep a Swiffer duster under my car seat and just hit the dash etc. a couple of times a week. I use plastic grocery bags to gather trash, replacing them weekly. A small dust brush will take out debris from crevices and use for a quick brush of the carpets. It takes about 5 mins each time I do it.
