I got this tip from some nurse friends on getting blood out of fabrics. I have used it on both fresh blood stains and old ones. Soak in Hydrogen Perioxide (do not dilute) and after letting it do its work breaking down the enzymes in the blood stain, rinse and if necessary use ordinary bar of soap or laundry detergent and gently scrub.

the Ultimate Stain Remover for laundry is 1/4 cup automated dishwasher powder (cascade) 1/2 cup non chlorine bleach(clorax 2) and 1 gallon of hot water. Let the clothes soak for 8 hours and wash in the normal wash mode with this solution, no additional soap required. This gets out blood and other stains that have been set in for years. The only thing it hasnt gotten out it ink.

For blood stains: Wet the fabric (cold water only!), then rub with handsoap. Add a capful or more of hydrogen peroxide to the stain and let stand. Rinse after 5-10 minutes, then repeat (this time in reverse, capful, then rub with soap). After 5 more minutes, rinse. If it's not too old a stain, it should come right out.

If you cut or scrape yourself while cleaning, and get some blood on your clothes or any material, use a cotton ball and some Hydrogen Peroxide immediately, and the blood won't stain. Launder as usual....great for mom's who have small children that get "owies" alot.

Unless you are sure what caused the stain, and you know it is the thing to do, avoid putting the aritcle in hot water, as this may set the stain, especally blood, so put unknown or blood stains in cold water to play it safe

More of a warning than a tip - don't over do the bleach in any cleaning. I was trying to get some blood out of the carpet and dumped a whole load of beach on to a cream carpet. Discovered that bleach doesn't bleach things cream...ouch...

Having hacked a finger off attempting to build some shelves I found that bloodstains can be removed from carpet by soaking in cold water, blotting with some kitchen roll and then finishing off with carpet shampoo - the finger got sewn back on...
